Content: <p>The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) supports and fosters the archival of geological, geophysical, and engineering data, maps, samples, and other physical specimens by providing technical and financial assistance to state geological surveys and Department of Interior (DOI) bureaus. The NGGDPP supports a national cooperative network of geoscience materials and data repositories operated independently and guided by common standards, procedures, and protocols. Holdings of these repositories are accessible through the <a href="https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/?community=NGGDPP+-+National+Geological+and+Geophysical+Data+Preservation+Program">National Digital Catalog</a>. Through the use of standards for metadata generation, data delivery and cataloging; leveraging methods and infrastructure established by efforts such as the U.S. Geoscience Information Network; and partnerships in data preservation and curation activities, the NGGDPP seeks to advance the sharing of geoscientific metadata and data to promote information discovery, access, and interoperability. The evolving aggregate of these repository holdings is providing an extensive source of geoscience data and materials to serve national needs.</p>

Content: <p>In 2014, the California Geological Survey (CGS) proposed to convert multiple databases containing geologic/geophysical borehole and scanned reports into a unified database. The geologic data contained within the database are associated with <a href="http://www.acgov.org/cda/planning/generalplans/documents/08_PublicSafety.pdf">mandated liquefaction and landside assessment studies in Alameda County</a>. The proposed project was designed to enable incorporation of additional metadata (such as hyperlinks to online PDF files) and data were&nbsp;translated into the new database. Data from Alameda County were used as a test case, to establish data conversion and delivery processes. The database server was modernized to serve data over the Internet using web servicing techniques. The CGS requested and received $33,717 for the proposed work, which included 516 hours of student time.</p> <p><a href="http://www.conservation.ca.gov/cgs/shzp/Documents/SHZ_FactSheet.pdf">The Seismic Hazards Mapping Act</a> was passed by the California Legislature in response to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. This legislation requires the California Geological Survey to delineate zones of required investigation where the probability of ground failure due to soil liquefaction or landslides is high. CGS determines the boundaries of these zones on the basis of engineering geologic and geotechnical engineering reports prepared by consultants for development projects, submitted to local governmental agencies to obtain building permits. Public access to this data improves future zoning and provides&nbsp;a ready data source for future projects and studies. The Seismic Hazard Mapping Act allows developers to waive the special studies requirement if they can provide existing data that shows a hazard does not exist on their site; access to the CGS data may&nbsp;prevent unnecessary expenditures that might limit otherwise economically viable projects. Many cities and some counties do not have data preservation plans in their offices. CGS has found that these agencies dispose of the geotechnical report data soon after building permits are granted. In addition, consulting firms that prepare the data are frequently unwilling to grant access to their files or the reports are unavailable for other reasons, such as company buyouts or liability concerns. These issues make the data collected by CGS an invaluable resource, for CGS and all its customers.</p>

Content: <p>In 2014, the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) proposed to review 20,000 folders of oil and gas records for documents missing from the Kentucky Oil and Gas Repository, and add digital images to the <a href="http://kgs.uky.edu/kgsweb/geology/image_search.asp">existing online resource</a>. The KGS western Kentucky office maintains a separate file of historical well records that has been compiled from a variety of sources. This collection is known to contain some original documents not in the main office, as well as working copies that have valuable annotations that have been made over the years. The only access to these unique documents is by visual inspection of the original documents at the western Kentucky office. KGS has lacked resources to make significant progress with the comparison of the two collections to identify unique documents to scan and append to the online repository. There are estimated to be 80,000 document folders that need review, and this is likely to constitute a multi-year effort. The KGS requested and received $32,027 for the proposed work, which included 1,820 hours of student time.</p> <p>The most frequently accessed KGS data are related to <a href="http://www.uky.edu/KGS/emsweb/index.htm">oil and gas wells</a>. Companies around the globe use KGS&rsquo;s free, online data services to view and download data for developing new prospects. Online access saves companies both money and time and places Kentucky at an advantage in attracting development activity. This project helped to&nbsp;add valuable records to the online repository that&nbsp;were previously only available by visiting the western Kentucky office in Henderson.</p>

Content: <p>In 2014, the Massachusetts Geological Survey (MGS) proposed to complete scanning paper geology publications <span style="line-height: 23.1111106872559px;">as digital documents</span>&nbsp;for preservation and public access. The project&nbsp;involved scanning 21 publications held at the University of Massachusetts Department of Geosciences that only have limited print copies remaining (referred to as Geology Contributions). The 21 Geology Contributions are part of a larger collection of documents consisting of 75 publications; the other 54 publications&nbsp;were&nbsp;previously scanned with the support of a NGGDPP grant.&nbsp;The Geology Contributions were digitized using a copier/scanner and flatbed scanner. Through optical character recognition software (Adobe Acrobat), searchable pdf documents were created and&nbsp;made available on the <a href="http://www.geo.umass.edu/research/list.html">MGS webpage</a> for&nbsp;public access. Larger maps were scanned on a large format scanner in the Department of Geosciences. These Geology Contributions are typically 150 to 200 pages in length and many contain field maps. Generation of a high-quality, searchable digital product required approximately four hours on average. The MGS requested and received $3,071 for the proposed work.</p> <p>The online availability of these documents has&nbsp;increased their usage and value to the public when doing background research for major engineering projects or subsurface investigations. The documents are used by environmental consultants doing hazard mitigation assessments,&nbsp;geotechnical firms working on large construction projects, and&nbsp;researchers&nbsp;planning major subsurface investigations.</p>

Content: <p>Information about State geoscientific collections and their respective samples are available in the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP). States may access the National Data Catalog&nbsp;to view, add, and update information about geoscientific collections and associated samples. The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program exists in ScienceBase, a data management platform. Spatial search allows designation of area of interest to find collections and samples.</p> <h2>Navigating Collection Samples</h2> <p style="line-height: 23.1111106872559px;">Upon log in, in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/?community=NGGDPP+-+National+Geological+and+Geophysical+Data+Preservation+Program">National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program</a>, in top left corner, hover on NGGDPP to produce a drop down menu. Select the first option, NGGDPP Top-Level Folder to view the organization of NGGDPP State collections. Each State collection folder contains sub-folders for separate physical sample collections. Select folders and sub-folders to view their contents. Each sample is described in an individual summary page, showing information provided by the State describing the item, including mapped location.</p> <p style="line-height: 23.1111106872559px;">For example,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/folder/4f4e4762e4b07f02db47e004?community=NGGDPP+-+National+Geological+and+Geophysical+Data+Preservation+Program">Geological Survey of Alabama folder</a>&nbsp;includes 20 physical sample collections, one of which is the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/folder/4f4e4acae4b07f02db67d222?community=NGGDPP+-+National+Geological+and+Geophysical+Data+Preservation+Program">Cenozoic Fossils of the Toulmin Collection from Alabama</a>. Each item in this collection may be selected to display the sample summary page, showing all sample metadata provided by Geological Survey of Alabama.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/4f4e4acae4b07f02db67d222?community=NGGDPP+-+National+Geological+and+Geophysical+Data+Preservation+Program">Alabama&#39;s Toulmin Collection&#39;s metadata page</a>&nbsp;shows information about the collection, including associated child items or samples within the collection, mapped sampling locations for items belonging to the collection, and files associated with the collection. These associated CSV or XML files are uploaded to the National Digital Catalog and attached to the collection metadata record. The attached files are processed and parsed into separate metadata records that comprise the collection.</p> <h2>Log in to add and edit sample information</h2> <p>Each State participating in the NGGDPP has designated personnel authorized to write (add and edit metadata) to the National Digital Catalog.
